Are You Really Ready to Create a Logo? Ask Yourself These 10 Questions First

Designing a logo isn’t just about picking colors and slapping your name next to a trendy icon—it’s about defining how your business shows up in the world. Whether you're launching a new brand or rebranding an existing one, taking the time to think through what you really want from your logo can save you time, money, and creative frustration.

To help you get clear on your vision, I’ve put together a simple questionnaire I use with clients before starting the design process. Use this as a self-assessment or share it with your designer to kick off your project the right way.

1. What is the exact name you'd like to appear in the logo?

2. Do you have a tagline or slogan you want included?

Tagline (if any): ___________________________

3. Briefly describe your business or organization.
(What do you do? What makes you unique?)

4. Who is your target audience or customer?

5. What kind of feeling or message should the logo convey?
(Select all that apply)
[ ] Modern [ ] Classic [ ] Bold [ ] Elegant [ ] Friendly [ ] Professional [ ] Other: __________

6. Are there specific colors you'd like to use or avoid?
Preferred Colors: ____________________
Avoid: ____________________

7. Do you have any symbols, imagery, or ideas in mind for the logo?

8. Are there any logos you love (from any industry)?
(Include links or image references if possible)

9. Where will the logo be used?
(Select all that apply)
[ ] Website [ ] Social Media [ ] Business Cards [ ] Signs [ ] Shirts/Merchandise [ ] Other: __________

10. Any other notes or ideas you'd like to share?

Why This Matters

Your logo is often the first impression people will have of your brand. If it's rushed or unclear, it can miss the mark completely. By answering these questions up front, you're making sure your logo reflects your values, audience, and long-term goals.
