Step-by-Step Guide: Setting Up andVerifying Your Google Business Profile

Step 1: Search for Your Business on Google

Before you create a new listing, it’s crucial to check whether your business already exists in Google’s database.

How to check:

1. Visit Google Business Profile Manager.

2. Click “Manage Now.”

3. Type your business name and location.

4. If your business appears → you’ll claim it (see Step 2A).

If not → you’ll create a new listing (see Step 2B).

Tip: Duplicate listings can hurt visibility, so always check before adding a new one.

Step 2A: Claim an Existing Listing

If your business is already listed but not under your control, you’ll need to claim ownership.

How to claim:

1. Click the business listing in the results.

2. Select “Claim this business.”

3. Sign in with your Google account.

4. Follow the on-screen prompts to verify ownership.

If another account already manages it, you’ll see an option to request access. Google will notify

the current owner, and if they don’t respond, you can often gain access after a waiting period.

Pro Tip: Keep proof of ownership ready (lease, business license, photos of signage) — this helps if you need to dispute ownership.

Step 2B: Create a New Google Business Profile

If your business isn’t listed, it’s time to create one from scratch.

How to create a new listing:

1. Go to Google Business Profile Manager.

2. Click “Add your business to Google.”

3. Enter your business name and choose the most accurate category.

4. Add your business location or service area.

5. Enter contact info (phone number, website).

6. Set business hours and add a short description.

7. Click “Finish” — Google will prompt you to verify.

Step 3: Verify Your Business

Verification confirms that your business is legitimate and ensures no one else can claim your profile. There are several methods available, depending on Google’s eligibility criteria.

Postcard Verification (Most Common)

• Google mails a postcard to your business address (within 5–14 days).

• Enter the code in your profile dashboard.

• Avoid changing key info (name, address, category) while waiting — it can reset the process.

Phone or Email Verification

If eligible, Google will send a code via call or email.

Make sure your number or email matches your listed contact details.

Instant Verification

If your website is already verified in Google Search Console, you may be verified instantly.

Video Verification (Newer Option)

You’ll record a short walkthrough showing:

• Your exterior signage and address

• Entryway and workspace

• Tools, inventory, or branded materials

• Proof you operate at that location

Step 4: After Verification — Keep It Active!

Once verified, your GBP becomes a powerful marketing tool. Here’s how to maintain and optimize it:

• Add fresh photos and videos regularly.

• Post updates, events, or promotions weekly.

• Encourage and respond to reviews.

• Keep hours and contact info up to date.

• Use the “Insights” tab to monitor calls, direction requests, and views.

Why It Matters

A complete and verified Google Business Profile helps your business:

• Rank higher in local search and Google Maps.

• Build credibility through reviews and accurate information.

• Generate more calls, clicks, and in-person visits.

Businesses with complete and verified profiles are 70% more likely to attract local visits and 2.7× more likely to be considered trustworthy by customers.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Postcard not arriving: Re-request after 14 days, verify address formatting, and don’t edit info until it arrives.

Listing claimed by someone else: Request access, wait for response, and prepare proof of ownership (license, lease, photos).

Duplicate listings: Choose the correct one and request a merge through Google Support.

Verification rejected: Double-check name, address, category, and visible signage — submit supporting documents.

Suspended profile: Review Google’s guidelines, remove prohibited content, and submit a reinstatement request.
